hey gorgeous... welcome to mexico

Let’s TACObout Mexico! Home to one of the 7 wonders of the world though this isn’t the only reason to visit this Mayan paradise, we can think of Juan or two more. It is without a doubt you will revel in the rays of sunshine along the sand filled coastline, slurping on lolly ices and Margarita’s of course. Mexico is a dream destination that enchants so many tourists every year, not only for the beauty of its destinations, its gastronomy and so much amazing culture, but for the friendly welcome of its people, the quality of service make it the perfect destination for all tastes.

LGBT+ tourism is no exception, because in Mexico you will find stunning and safe spaces, as everyone is treated with respect and equality.

Mexico is known as one of the friendliest countries for the LGBT + community thanks to its laws and the openness of the majority of its society to this community, making this destination one of the best to enjoy.

  • Mexico ranked 40 in the 2021 Spartacus Index for LGBT travel
  • The decriminalisation of same-sex sexual acts happened in 1871
  • Since the late 1970s, pride parades and marches have occurred in Mexico City
  • Though same-sex marriage and adoption laws are not technically a clean cut green light, they are in effect as every judge must rule in favour of same-sex couples seeking these rights.
  • Part of Mexico’s rich cultural history celebrates a third gender, referred to as ‘muxe’. The parameters for what is considered ‘muxe’ overlaps with what we know in the west as transgender or nonbinary, and it is traditionally said in Mexico that having a ‘muxe’ in the family brings good luck.
  • In 2001 Mexico’s Federal Constitution was amended to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation.

why mexico?

intro...puerto vallarta

Wander around the colourful buildings of Zona Romantica in Puerto Vallarta where clubs are pumping with energy, speaking of energy the LGBT+ bars and clubs flood the cobble stoned streets where you can shop until you drop, alternatively you can Sl*t drop yourself straight to Paco’s ranch (a huge club) with Drag shows for entertainment.

This charming City offers great local shopping, pristine beaches and a lively nightlife scene, what more could you ask for on a trip here. Head out on a boat cruise to a secluded gay beach and look out for dolphins or even go down and get wet beneath the waves and search for the whole finding nemo cast.

Located nearby the popular Red Beach, there’s plenty to see and do in the prehistoric village of Akrotiri. Here you can taste some local seafood, try out diving or go on a boat tour. It’s also your chance to see some breath-taking ruins, an experience that can’t be missed!

intro...mexico city

Sprawling out in the centre of the country, you won’t find sandy beaches or a cooling coastal breeze in Mexico City. What you will find, however, is tree lined avenues, vibrant culture and an open minded mentality leading by example to make Mexico one of the most popular LGBT friendly destinations in the Americas. The first pride march was held here in CDMX (Ciudad de México) in 1979 and the city has been striding ahead ever since, proudly sashaying into the 21st century as a destination welcoming to all travellers and hosting plenty of spaces to celebrate the LGBT community.
Zona Rosa is the city’s famous gaybourhood, a vivacious party district full to the brim with gay bars and thirsty revelers looking for a good night. Don’t clutch your pearls when you walk past the numerous loud and proud sex shops in the area! There is also a thriving Korean community in this neighbourhood, so you’ll be right in the mix of Mexico City’s cultural melting pot. La Condesa is a slightly more boujee barrio, with trendy cafes and upmarket shopping and dining, so if you need a charming change of scenery from the chaos of Zona Rosa, head to La Condesa.

Renowned for its green spaces, CDMX offers plenty of parks for you to stop and take a breather from city life. Parque Mexico has a ton of Art Deco installations to catch your wandering eye, and Bosque de Chapultepec is one of the largest city parks in the western hemisphere - so if you need some peace and quiet, you’ll find it here. From urban gardens to floating ones, if you’re feeling intrepid you can visit the Floating Gardens of Xochimilco. Hop on a trajinera and float through the Venice of Mexico, taking in sites such as Isla de las Munecas which started as a memorial to a young girl who drowned, and has ended up as a gathering of hanging dolls along the canal. Continuing your city exploration, check out the setting for the James Bond film Spectre which can be found on the Zócalo Square, poke around the ancient ruins preserved in the heart of the city at Templo Mayor, and swat up on your cultural intellect at the Frida Kahlo Museum. There is plenty to explore in this lively city and there is a handy metro system that connects you to it all. (The inside scoop is to head to the last compartment of the metro train - that’s where all the cool kids looking for other cool kids sit!)

intro...cancun

The gay scene may be more lowkey than in PV, but the draw of Cancun is affordable luxury and beach-side bliss. Cancun is a handy gateway to international airports, and is also within driving distance to many of the region’s top attractions such as Chichen Itza. Get an early start and head out of the modern resort metropolis to an ancient wonder of the world and immerse yourself in the fascinating history and culture of the Mayans.

If a beach day is on the cards, Playa Delfines is a popular spot for LGBT visitors, being Cancun’s unofficial gay beach! It’s a lowkey beach in a more remote setting away from the crowds of the resorts. For a more laid back beach break, hop on the short ferry ride over to Isla Mujeres and bask in the Mexican-Caribbean vibes of this small-town island. There are plenty of pools and stretches of beach to sun-soak the day away and in the evening you’ll have your pick of chilled out bars to end the day with a nice, refreshing beer - or something stronger! Be sure to check out the Temple of the mayan goddess Ixchel for a sprinkle of culture in your holiday.

intro...playa del carmen

Playa del Carmen has a thriving community of LGBTQ locals and the repeat visitors from Europe and North America have made the town a LGBTQ+ hotspot that's both welcoming and fun.

Playa del Carmen Pride festival is held each year in June, and features pride parties, parades, and events attracting visitors from around the world. There are occasional parties and special events hosted throughout the year by some of the more liberated hotels and resorts in Riviera Maya.

This part of the Caribbean Coast is the prime location to head off and explore some of the area’s biggest tourist attractions. Easy to explore the Mayan ruins of Tulum.

Riviera Maya offers perfect weather, soft white sand beaches, and sparkling clear water, it’s easy to get lost in this Mexican paradise. You can swim with turtles and tropical fish in the crystal clear waters.

Head over to Cozumel, an island that celebrates gay culture with an annual pride festival, and gay marriage is legal in the state of Quintana Roo to which Cozumel belongs.

Many gays and lesbians have started seeing Playa del Carmen as an alternative to its big sister Puerto Vallarta and bustling Cancun.

Every year, around february time, Mexico hosts the biggest gay event in Playa del Carmen. The Arena Festival is 6 days of complete fun, music and so much more with 15 unique parties with amazing dj's not to be missed. Arena Festival promises an unforgettable week.
