Visit Lisbon

Strike a pose *vogue vogue*

Yep, that's right, Lisbon is the current home of the Queen herself, MADONNA! Need we say more about why Lisbon is great? Ok, yeah, fair enough, Lisbon ticks so many more incredible boxes than just having an Icon live there.

As well as being one of the oldest Western European cities, it's also one of the cheapest, so its a fantastic destination for wanting to spend without really spending. Lisbon is such a picturesque place, it's difficult to not fall in love with it immediately, and it's got all sorts of museums and galleries to feed into its beauty.

We fell in love with Bar 106 because of just how welcoming it really is. It's so brilliantly inclusive and that makes it super popular with everyone who falls under the trans umbrella. Staff and bouncers ensure that all guests feel comfortable, the drinks are cheap and there are live shows too! What more could you ask for?

Another iconic club for shows is the Finalmente Club, and as always, size doesn't matter. It might be small but holy moly is it mighty! The oldest gay club in town, their stage often a spot where LGBTQ+ rights and social transformation is fought for. This place gets super busy and is well worth a visit!

If gruff is your thing, don't miss the bear club TR3S, but even if you aren't a chaser, there's a beautiful terrace to chill out on in summer months!

lgbt liberation

It wasn’t until 1982 that homosexual activity was decriminalised in Portugal. Fast forward a couple of decades and the country is now leading the way in terms of LGBT liberation. In 2011, for example, the president signed an advanced gender identity law, making it easier for the transgender community to change sex. Portugal is also the 8th country in the world to recognise same-sex marriage. Hallelujah!

But what good would this be without the support of the Portuguese people? They made their stance clear in the 2019 Eurobarometer opinion survey with 74% giving same-sex marriage the thumbs up and 80% believing that the LGBT community should share equal rights. A party with the Portuguese is definitely on the cards!

Lisbon in particular has a flourishing gay scene. Not only does the city have LGBT-dedicated bars at every corner but it’s also home to the country’s largest Pride parade which attracts circa 70,000 proud individuals per year. 🏳️‍🌈
