The LGBTQ+ scene might not be huge here, but it's as mighty as can be and is proudly the most gay-friendly country on earth according to the IGLTA!
Malta is lucky enough to have pretty nice weather all year round so there's no "best time" to go, it all depends on what activities you prefer. Obviously, summer is going to be the best for sunbathing but can get super busy, but if you wanted to explore some of the nature and history the temperature is slightly cooler in winter months but it still beats an English summer 99% of the time!
The unofficial gay area of Malta is in Paceville - or "Partyville", though friendly everywhere, this area is a must!
Shake your tail feather at the incredible cocktail and cabaret bar - The Birdcage! Here you can also release your inner superstar, strut on the stage and sing karaoke if you want to. Moari is a pretty chilled out bar owned by a lesbian couple, located right on the waterfront at St Elmo Bay - it's a local haunt for artists and entertainers. Michaelangelo's Club Lounge is definitely the place to be club wise and has been known to host the ultimate parties by S2S and Lollipop!
lgbtq+ liberation in malta
With the highest recorded IGLTA score and a strong reputation for high standards in terms of LGBTQ+ rights, Malta is winning the race to equality. Don't believe us? Feast your eyes on these facts:
- Homosexual activity in Malta has been legal since Elton John released Goodbye Yellow Brick Road on vinyl(1973).
- In 2016, the southern island became the first country in the EU to ban the dangerous practice of conversion therapy.
- It's illegal to discriminate on the grounds on sexual orientation and gender identity.
- Malta is one of 5 countries in the world to give LGBT people equal constitutional rights, which we think is pretty amazing for such a small country in the Mediterranean!
If Malta isn't on your travel wish list, grab a sharpie and jot it down because it definitely should be.
